Energy-star labels: buy what costs less to run
More stars on the label means a lower running cost. Here's how to read SREDA's energy-star rating and use it to pick appliances that cost less every month.
In short
- More stars = less power = a lower monthly bill
- The label is on ACs, fridges, fans, lights and motors
- Use the wattage in the calculator to find your own savings
Why
Why the label matters
When you buy an appliance, the price isn't the only cost — so is the electricity it will use for years. SREDA's energy-star label tells you at a glance how efficient it is. Two ACs can look identical, yet a higher-star one can save a lot over a year.
Reading it
What's on the label
The label mainly shows: the star rating (more = more efficient), the appliance's capacity, and the brand & model number. The AC star scale runs from 1 to 10 — so don't compare stars straight across different appliance types; compare within the same kind.
Which appliances
Appliances that carry it
- Air conditioners (AC)
- Refrigerators & freezers
- Ceiling fans
- LED / lighting
- Motors
The programme is going mandatory in phases (SREDA runs it; BSTI sets and enforces the minimum standard), so not every model on the market is labelled yet.
Put it to work
Use stars to cut your bill
Between two appliances of the same kind, pick the higher-star one. To see exactly how much you'll save, take the wattage from the label and compare two models in our appliance cost calculator. To turn watts into units, use the unit converter.
AC numbers
Judge an AC by its EER
Beyond stars, an AC's label shows its EER (energy-efficiency ratio) or COP — the bigger the number, the more efficient. Below about EER 2.9 is weak. SREDA's market benchmark gives these typical values:
These are market-average benchmarks — when buying, aim for an AC whose EER beats them. An inverter AC can save even more than its EER label suggests.
