Working backwards

From taka to units — reversing the electricity bill

The normal calculator turns units into taka. This one does the opposite: you know the amount charged, and you want the units and the real price per unit.

A real question

A DESCO commercial meter, worked out

A reader wrote in: a DESCO commercial meter, ৳6,480 charged at the peak rate and ৳13,360 at the off-peak rate, roughly ৳19,829 in total — what is the price per unit? The amounts are money; to get a per-unit price you first have to recover the units behind each amount.

Using the LT-E commercial rates in this tool (peak ৳18.43, off-peak ৳13.82), the peak taka buys about 6,480 ÷ 18.43 = 352 units, and the off-peak taka buys 13,360 ÷ 13.82 = 967 units — roughly 1,319 units in all. Divide the total energy charge by that and the blended rate lands near ৳15 per unit.

The math

One formula, applied per bucket

Units = Amount charged ÷ Rate per unit
Average price/unit = Total energy charge ÷ Total units

The peak and off-peak sub-charges printed on a bill are energy amounts before VAT. VAT (5%) is added on the total, and a demand charge based on your sanctioned load (kW) sits on top of that — neither changes the units. If the figures you have already include VAT, flip the toggle and the tool divides them back out first.
