1 unit = 1 kWh = 1,000 watt-hours. They are the same quantity under two names, so there is nothing to convert — here is the arithmetic, what it costs in taka, and why watts are a different measure entirely.
What is 1 unit of electricity equal to?
1 unit = 1 kWh
= 1,000 watt-hours
Two names for the same thing. Your bill says “unit”, your meter says kWh, and the number is identical — there is nothing to convert. 40 kWh is 40 units.
So how many watts is 1 unit?
This is the common mix-up, so plainly: watts and units do not measure the same kind of thing.
- Watt (W)Power — how hard an appliance draws, right now.
- Unit (kWh)Energy — how much it drew over time. This is what you are billed on.
1,000 watts × 1 hour = 1 unit
Turning watts into units always needs a number of hours. Without them, “1 unit = how many watts” has no answer.

The units row always matches kWh — that is the whole point. Cost here uses one flat rate; a real bill applies slabs, a demand charge and 5% VAT.
