How it works

Watts, hours, and the real cost of every appliance

Wattage × hours ÷ 1000 = units (kWh). Multiply by your tariff to get the taka. Here's why the printed wattage isn't always what you pay for.

1,400 W150 W75 WMONTHLY COST৳ 2,549

The essentials

  • Rated wattage on the sticker is the maximum — most appliances average lower in real use
  • Bangladesh tariff is slab-based, so adding one appliance can push your whole bill into a higher slab
  • AC, fridge, and water heater account for 70%+ of most residential bills

The math

How cost is calculated

Every appliance pulls a certain wattage when on. That wattage, multiplied by the hours you use it, gives the energy it consumes in watt-hours. Divide by 1000 and you have kilowatt-hours (kWh) — what your meter measures and your bill calls “units.”

A 1,400 W inverter AC running 8 hours a day uses 1400 × 8 ÷ 1000 = 11.2 units per day, or 336 units per month. At ৳7.59/unit that’s ৳2,549 a month — from a single appliance.

Important nuance

Rated wattage vs running wattage

The wattage printed on the appliance is its rated wattage — what it draws at maximum load. An inverter AC labelled 2,200 W can spend most of its run-time at 700–1,100 W once the room has cooled. Refrigerators behave similarly: a 150 W average is realistic even though the compressor briefly hits 400+ W on every cycle.

When this calculator matters

Real-world use cases

1

Buying a new AC

A 1.5-ton inverter at 1,200 W average vs an old non-inverter at 1,800 W: ৳570/month for a Dhaka apartment with 8 hours daily use. Over 10 years that’s ৳68,400 — often more than the price gap between units.
2

Diagnosing a bill jump

If your bill rose ৳3,000 and you suspect the AC, plug actual wattage + hours and check whether the math adds up. Half the time it does, half the time it’s something else.
3

Geyser vs gas

A 2,000 W electric geyser for 1 h/day = 60 units/month = ~৳456. Compare against piped gas or LPG cylinder cost.

Frequently asked questions

Bangladesh tariff uses slabs — the rate per unit increases with monthly consumption. This calculator uses a single rate. Use the main bill calculator for slab-aware figures.
