How much is a 100, 200, 300 or 400-unit electricity bill in Bangladesh?

See exactly how 100, 200, 300 and 400 units turn into a Bangladesh household electricity bill under the June 2026 BERC tariff, with slab, demand-charge and VAT examples.

Searching for a simple answer to “how much is a 200-unit electricity bill in Bangladesh?” The answer depends on your consumer category, sanctioned load and a few small line items. For a normal residential LT-A connection, though, the calculation is predictable. Here are worked examples for 50, 100, 200, 300 and 400 units using the current June 2026 BERC tariff.

The rates used in these examples

A household does not pay one flat price for every unit. The residential rate is stepped: the first 75 units use ৳5.26 each when monthly use is above 50 units; units 76–200 use ৳8.50; 201–300 use ৳9.10; and 301–400 use ৳9.62. If total use stays within 50 units, the lifeline rate is ৳4.63 per unit. These are energy charges only. The official source is the BERC retail tariff order, effective from the June 2026 billing cycle.

One detail causes a lot of confusion: once total use goes above 50 units, the lifeline rate does not continue for the first 50. The 0–75 step applies at ৳5.26, then the higher steps are added on top. That is why a 100-unit bill is not simply 100 × one “per-unit price”.

Quick answers: 100, 200, 300 and 400 units

Illustration with a 1 kW sanctioned load
Monthly unitsEnergy chargeWith demand + VAT
50৳231.50৳287.18
100৳607.00৳681.45
200৳1,457.00৳1,573.95
300৳2,367.00৳2,529.45
400৳3,329.00৳3,539.55

The last column includes a ৳42 monthly demand charge for 1 kW and 5% VAT on the energy charge plus demand charge. It does not include meter rent, service charges, arrears or a prepaid rebate, so treat it as a clean estimate rather than the exact amount on every bill.

How the 100-unit bill is calculated

For 100 units, the energy part is 75 × ৳5.26 + 25 × ৳8.50 = ৳607.00. Add the 1 kW demand charge of ৳42 and the subtotal is ৳649.00. Five per cent VAT is ৳32.45, giving an estimated total of ৳681.45 before meter-specific charges.

How the 200-unit bill is calculated

A 200-unit month uses two steps: 75 × ৳5.26 + 125 × ৳8.50 = ৳1,457.00. With ৳42 demand charge, the subtotal is ৳1,499.00; 5% VAT is ৳74.95. The example total is therefore ৳1,573.95.

This is why the jump from 100 to 200 units feels large. The extra 100 units are charged at ৳8.50 each, and VAT rises with the larger subtotal. The earlier 100 units do not all get repriced at ৳8.50.

How the 300-unit bill is calculated

At 300 units, add the full 201–300 step: 75 × ৳5.26 + 125 × ৳8.50 + 100 × ৳9.10 = ৳2,367.00 in energy cost. Add ৳42 demand and ৳120.45 VAT. The clean estimate is ৳2,529.45.

How the 400-unit bill is calculated

At 400 units, the next 100 units cost ৳9.62 each: 75 × ৳5.26 + 125 × ৳8.50 + 100 × ৳9.10 + 100 × ৳9.62 = ৳3,329.00. With the same 1 kW demand charge and VAT, the estimate is ৳3,539.55.

Why your actual bill may be different

  • Sanctioned load: demand charge is load × the rate for your category. A 5 kW residential connection adds ৳210 instead of ৳42.
  • Meter rent and service charges: these are separate line items and vary by connection and meter type.
  • Prepaid rebate: eligible prepaid meters receive a small rebate on energy use, so the deducted amount can be a little lower.
  • Arrears or late-payment items: an old balance, adjustment or surcharge can make the payable total higher than this month’s usage alone.
  • Different consumer category: shops, offices and industrial connections use LT-E, LT-C or another tariff, not the household LT-A slabs above.

Check your own number in three steps

  1. Read the “units consumed” and “C. Load” or sanctioned-load lines on the bill.
  2. Match the energy charge to the correct category and slab. The low-tension tariff table shows every current residential step.
  3. Enter the same units, category and load in the bill calculator. Add meter rent, arrears or a prepaid rebate separately if your bill includes them.

If you only remember one thing, remember this: “per unit price” is not one number for a residential bill. Your total is the sum of the applicable slabs, demand charge and VAT. That is the reason a 200-unit bill is not 200 times the price shown next to one slab.

Sources and method

Rates and the effective month were checked against the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission retail tariff order and the site’s low-tension rate table on 17 October 2026. The examples assume a postpaid LT-A household, 1 kW sanctioned load, no meter rent, no arrears and no rebate. Round-off on an individual distributor bill can therefore differ by a few taka.
